U.S. President Donald Trump has extended his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, announcing on Monday (March 23, 2026) that Washington will delay potential strikes on Iranian power plants by five days. Trump claimed that U.S. envoys are in talks with a “respected” Iranian leader and insisted that Tehran is willing “to make a deal.”

However, Iranian officials have flatly denied any such negotiations, asserting instead that the American President has “backed down” in response to Iran’s firm warning.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that he spoke with Trump on the same day. According to Netanyahu, the U.S. President believes recent U.S.-Israeli military gains in Iran could be leveraged into a negotiated settlement that safeguards Israel’s interests.

Adding another layer to the situation, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that Tehran has received messages via “friendly countries” suggesting a U.S. request for negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, as reported by the official IRNA news agency.
